Before you take a step through the days of updating the Monument, please take a look at these first 2 pictures below. The old version of the Monument was surounded by white stones, a fence and had grass leading up to the entrance; this would not have allowed easy access to the Monument for anyone in a wheel chair. It is also likely that any wheelchair being brought into the Monument area would sink in the 12+ inches of white stone which was present. This gentleman came by as the third day of work was coming to an end. As you can clearly see, not only cane he move freely with his wheelchair once at the Monument, but he also has an easy access to it from the sidewalk. . This may not have been a specifically planned result to the VFW's efforts to improve the Monument, but it certainly is a Bonus. This simple statue to our Local Fallen has been transformed into a Monument of which the community can truly be proud, and a standing Memorial to those who have Given All They had to Give, for Our FREEDOM.. |
